'5 Questions With': Ambar Lucid
"I don't really have a specific creative process. I kind of just go with the flow and check in with myself and how I feel."
Meet Ambar Lucid - At he helm of a new wave of Indie Latinx wave in America, the rising star has been making a lot of noise with her EP ‘Get Lost In The Music’ recently. Growing up, she has listened to the likes of Lady Gaga, Kesha and Selena Gomez, finding refuge while dreaming of a better future. Soon she discovered that a career in music could actually be on the cards, which then resulted in her learning how to play the Ukulele, Piano and the guitar, as well as uploading music onto SoundCloud. It didn’t take long for her to become noticed and gain a steady fanbase from day dot. Singing in both Spanish and English, the Dominican/Mexican songstress is effortlessly switching languages throughout her songs, and lyrically addresses experiences that she went through - such as her father’s deportation in previous critically acclaimed single ‘A Letter To My Younger Self’. Her soulful vocals, alongside psychedelic and dreamy psych-rock, pop and electronica influences, are a breath of fresh air and transports us to a whole new world. We caught up with her to speak about her project and more.

EQ: How did you first get into music?
AL: I started releasing songs on Soundcloud and different people from the industry found me like that, that’s how my manager discovered me. That might’ve been in 2017.
EQ: Your sound is really psychedelic - which artists inspired you and how did you ultimately find your signature sound?
AL: I was inspired by many many different artists and my sound is probably a result of everything I’ve listened to in my life. The artists that were influential throughout my life - when I was younger I was really into Lady Gaga, Ke$ha and Selena Gomez. As I got older I got really into Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Mac DeMarco, Sticky Fingers, Alice Phoebe Lou, and WILLOW.

EQ: You’ve recently released your new EP - how long was it in the making and what was the creative process for it?
AL: It was about a year or less in the making. I don’t really have a specific creative process. I kind of just go with the flow and check in with myself and how I feel. Depending on how I’m doing that day, that determines how I go about writing a song. Most of the sessions for ‘Get Lost In The Music’ were pretty chill, it was either me and ladies or me and Julien and we just hung out and talked about life and made music out of it.
EQ: What do you want your listeners to take away from your music?
AL: Hopefully healing or joy. Anything positive.
EQ: What else have you got planned this year, anything you can let us in on?
AL: I will be doing a few live shows this year. That’s what I’m looking forward to most.
