'5 Questions With': Anna Sofia
"I love playing characters that are so far away from who I really am in music videos. I get to make up my own characters for myself and do crazy things that I would never actually do. It's like being someone else for a day but you get to be whoever you wanna be"
If you’ve watched the highly acclaimed Netflix series Ginny & Georgia, you might have come across Anna Sofia‘s music already: meet the Greek-Canadian songstress, who is about to take over. Already from a young age, she was performing at her parents’ Greek restaurant - taking inspiration from the likes of Freddie Mercury, Elton John and Tyler, the Creator, performative art and entertainment has always been something she’s been drawn to.
Her previous EP’s ‘Broken Perfection‘ and ‘Self-Aware Bitch‘ have already amassed millions of streams and enabled her to grow her Gen-Z fanbase massively - Anna Sofia has undoubtedly found and claimed her spot in the scene thanks to her witty, relatable coming-of-age storytelling and her utterly creative music videos. Today marks the release of her highly anticipated visuals for single ‘Eat It All Up‘ and well, it’s pretty genius. Ahead of the release, we spoke to Anna Sofia about the new track, who she would play in Ginny & Georgia and her musical upbringing.

Words & Interview by Antonia Kuenzel
EQ: You have started performing already at the tender age of 4 years old, at your parent’s local restaurant. Clearly you were born to entertain! How did it all go from there?
A-S: I had always loved to perform with the band at my family’s restaurant when I was young. I remember falling asleep with my little toy guitar because I never wanted to leave. I was having so much fun! As I got a bit older I started taking dance lessons and piano lessons which I really ended up enjoying. I started to incorporate singing into the mix and would perform vocal and piano pieces at community events, and singing and dancing routines at dance competitions. From a very young age I had always known that I wanted to sing and perform for the rest of my life so I went for it. I started writing music for a little while and took some time to develop my sound, and eventually I released my first single “Meaner Girl”. From then on I’ve been living my dream.
EQ: Your upcoming single ‘Eat It All Up’ has been written over zoom! What was that like, and also how did the collaboration with Cici Ward, Mason Sacks and Jeff Hazin come about?
A-S: Writing over zoom was new to me when we had written the song. It was really difficult to feel creative at first. It’s just so different when everyone is in the studio together jamming and having fun. I feel like I naturally just become super creative in the studio because of the energy we create in the room. I had written with Cici, Jeff, and Mason in person before this so it made things much easier because we all already knew each other’s vibe. It ended up being so much fun and it was so nice to see them again even if it was virtual.

EQ: Let’s talk about your music video to ‘Eat it All Up’ - incredible! How did you come up with the idea, and the whole creative concept?
A-S: I love playing characters that are so far away from who I really am in music videos. I get to make up my own characters for myself and do crazy things that I would never actually do. It’s like being someone else for a day but you get to be whoever you wanna be. For this music video I just knew I wanted it to look super cute and fun to kinda hide the fact that it’s pretty gruesome and freaky. I also just knew I wanted to be a little bit crazy myself and that’s when I came up with the music video idea. In the video I kill my ex boyfriend and make cinnamon buns out of him and eat them with my new boyfriend but he doesn’t know until he finds a finger in his cinnamon bun. This was honestly so much fun to shoot and two of my super close friends were in it which made it an even better experience.
EQ: Your other single ‘ Self-Aware Bitch’ has been featured on the show Ginny and Georgia, amazing show and great song! How did it feel for the single to be featured on such a widely acclaimed series? And if you were a character on that show, who would you portray?
A-S: It was honestly such a crazy experience. To see the show do so well and to hear all the positive feedback that came with it made me so happy. I watched it with my mom and we were obsessed. It was a really cool experience to be watching a show and hearing my song play while I’m watching. We rewatched the scene so many times because we couldn’t believe that it was real. If I could choose one character to play on the show it would be Georgia. She’s a super outgoing and bubbly person which I feel like I resonate with, but she’s also SUPER suspicious and weird which would be such a fun character to play. It would be fun to be in her shoes and know everything that she knows that the rest of the characters in the show don’t know. She’s such a mystery I love it!
EQ: Finally, what else are you cooking up for the next few months?
A-S: Plenty! Over lockdown I was writing music constantly! I still am! I’m overflowing with demos that I’m just dying to release. We’ve got lots of new music coming and possibly another projectttttt…….. This new music is quite different from what is out right now but I don’t want to share much because I absolutely love surprises! All I can say is new music non stop and it’s gonna be a little change from what people know right now!
