'5 Questions With': BIIANCO
"As an artist, it’s difficult to stay true to a sound when artists are soaking up so many influences and get passionate in different directions. I think at the end of the day, the core of my sound is unabashedly honest."

Producer and singer BIIANCO dons many hats when it comes to their music. Most of the lyrics come from real experiences including a traumatic break-up. ‘Mixtape #2′ stresses the up and down feelings we all go through when it comes to love and relationships. “Mixtape #2 is a biproduct of what is going through,” says BIIANCO. “The songs are very much of a reflection of what my narrative was.”
I spoke to BIIANCO about the balancing act, the single ‘A Resurrection of Sorts’, and the collab with explosive singer Kaleena Zanders.

EQ: How do you balance producing and singing?
B: It was kind of out of necessity and it became an asset. Sometimes, I produce things that I can’t picture myself singing. In my single ‘A Resurrection Of Sorts‘ I could hear a gospel singer but passed it off to Kaleena Zanders.
EQ: What is the song ‘A Resurrection of Sorts’ about? How did you meet up with Kaleena Zanders?
B: I write songs that happen to me right at the moment. I went through all the stages after this particular breakup. I went through love, grief, rage, numbness, and rebirth. It’s about feeling something again. It’s about liking yourself again. Am I making myself proud and do I like myself again are the questions I asked. My mixtape has to end with resurrection, though. People do feel again after a while.
I and Kaleena have been friends for a while. We played a music festival together in 2020. We connected over social media and we had a couple of sessions in person. Her gospel voice is the only voice I heard in this song.

EQ: You capture the sound of EDM/House/Dance of the early 00s. Do you think there’s a market for that still?
B: That was also big in the late 80s/early 90s too. People come back to sounds and it’s so influenced by timeless things. I listen to Billie Holiday stuff too. That genre is such a hodgepodge of influences. It’s timeless in itself.
EQ: How do you stay grounded in this business?
B: I feel like this business constantly keeps me grounded. You are faced with so much rejection. As an artist, it’s difficult to stay true to a sound when artists are soaking up so many influences and get passionate in different directions. I think at the end of the day, the core of my sound is unabashedly honest. I’d like to blend genres though. You won’t hear me go saccharine pop, though.
EQ: You are launching an interactive Tarot card website, which leads to a tailored Spotify playlist. Can you tell me more about it?
B: When I was writing ‘Mixtape #2′, Tarot became a very important part of my daily ritual. We worked with Spotify on the theme of the card you pull. I’m very excited about it.
