Meet Fiona Grey, the next colorful, fiery singer on the horizon to take on pop music. Her new MNDR-produced single ‘Sick Of It’ is kickstarting a new era. “Pop songs can be a full expression of life. I hope my music can be colorful and at the same time raw,” the eclectic singer says.

EQUATE sat down with Fiona and we talked about Lady Gaga, working with MNDR, and her new single ‘Sick Of It’.

Words by Robert Frezza

EQ: How did you get in the music arena in the first place?

FG: My father is a musician and my mother is an actor. So, the arts isn’t something big crazy I didn’t want to go into. I released my first song when I was six for The Disney Channel.

EQ: You remind me a lot like Lady Gaga. Is she an influence on you?

FG: Gaga for sure. I just love humans who just don’t give a fuck and make whatever art they want. I had split custody between Los Angeles and Chicago. Chicago kept me grounded while Los Angeles kept me wild and free. I think in Los Angeles from at a very young age there are people who tell you who you are and what exactly you should be doing. I’m very inspired by Gaga and Madonna for that reason. They both create the art they want. I know Gaga was inspired by Madonna as well.

EQ: What was it like working with producer MNDR?

FG: She’s an insane producer. She spoke at a panel with K.Flay and Julia Michaels. I introduced myself to her then. Six months later, she called me, and she said you are the only person I remember from the panel and I think that’s a sign that we should work together. We wrote ‘Sick Of It’ and it came so quickly and we completely clicked. I love working with her. I am actively looking for more female producers to work with as well.

EQ: Did MNDR give you any advice or pointers in the business?

FG: She highlighted being true to yourself. The funny thing with trends is if you chase them, you will always be late on them. So, once Billy Eilish’s record came out if you’re trying to make a minimalistic production record like that, she already moved on to something else. If you continue to make the music that excites you, you are not chasing trends, you are creating trends. She highlighted some of the same beliefs that I had.

EQ: Tell me more about your single “Sick Of It”. What and who is it about?

FG: The thing about songs, you want people to take whatever part of the song that might connect the most to their life and give them the ability to make that an anthem for what they’re going through. The song is about fake conversations, the need for this one kind of beauty, and universally sick of people fronting and not being genuine. Sometimes, as times go by, I’ll relate to my own song with something different that I initially wrote it about.
