Singer-songwriter Katie Tupper is quietly making a name for herself. The Saskatoon Canadian’s music is difficult to put her harmonies in one genre of music. Her ethereal sound and husky vocals are phenomenal, and she is only 24 years old.

Tupper’s song, off 2022’s EP Towards The End, “How Can I Get Your Love?” debuted on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music 1 show. “It was super validating to have my music on that huge platform of someone I’m a massive fan of. It’s not like I’m shouting out to the void anymore. People are actually listening.” Tupper jokes. Now the singer is gearing up for her EP to debut in February of next year.

I sat down with the unique singer and talked about her influences, being on one of Canada’s premiere record labels, and creating the fantastic EP Towards The End.

Words by Robert Frezza

EQ: Who were your influences growing up?

K: Growing up my parents put me on the cool stuff before they’re big. They have their hand on the pulse. I loved Canadian pop and punk bands—-Simple Plan and Billy Talent. The closer I got to making my own music I loved Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Anderson Paak, and a variety of neo soul artists.

EQ: Your vocals are very husky.

K: I had a year of vocal training when I was thirteen when I joined the local children’s choir. My dad is amazing singer and musician, so I grew up with it in the house.

EQ: You are on Canada’s Arts and Crafts records?

K: They are so cool, they have cool artists on their roster, and they really care about developing artists. They have really great creative minds behind their label.

EQ: You worked with producer Conor Seidel, who worked with Charlotte Cardin. How did you like working with him?

K: I met him through my A&R. I went to his studios in Quebec. We finished my EP in ten days. Things just started lifting from the pandemic. “How Can I Get Your Love?” was the last thing we worked on while we were there. It ended up being this beautiful song. He whips up melodies and it gets me very excited.

EQ: Your latest song “How Can I Get Your Love” is safe to say about love and relationships?

K: It’s the ultimate desperation song. I try to weave a lot of elements of Saskatoon and from where I grew up. It’s about holding on to things from your past.
