LALITA is the brilliant new voice commanding her space in the music scene, a one-of-a-kind solo artist who is has been playing unique shows and working with some of the most exciting producers around such as Joy Anonymous and Jammer, LALITA discovered her passion for music whilst travelling to new parts of the world and absorbing sounds and cultures. Speaking to her on her new single “Honourable” we were able to delve into the world of the multifaceted singer. Her new track aims to send a message, “Honourable is all emotion. It’s restrained power and complexity emerge over the course of the track” which is a vulnerability LALITA is not afraid of showing. Read the feature below…

EQ: Hey LALITA, could you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into music?

L: I always new I wanted to be a singer for as long as I can remember, I think I got into by just having perseverance and not settling for anything else other than my dream. I’m from a tiny little town in Cheshire and made the decision to leave university after failing two attempts of education to submerse myself into music, not really knowing where to start I began to travel, when I left it was like music would always find its way to me, I never stop creating wherever I am. I spent six months in India where I was singing with my band, India was like my artist play ground as it gave me the freedom to write, learn, collaborate and perform as often I wanted to with incredible people/musicians. After spending so much time creating and exploring myself and music I was keen to come back to London and integrate everything I’d learnt whilst away and pour it into my art over here. When I moved back to London I had a strong intention and was blessed to begin creating shortly after the move, the first studio I used here on arriving back was the studio we recorded “Honourable” in.

EQ: Who would you cite as your biggest inspiration(s)?

L: My biggest inspirations would have to be India Arie and Lauryn Hill for their ability to reflect such knowledge and wisdom into their music, I love how India especially uses her voice as a tool to heal, I think that’s really beautiful when you use your talent with such intention. I’m also very inspired by FKA twigs for her ability to combine her music so gracefully with her other artistries. I also admire Frank Ocean and Jai Paul for their modesty within music and their unique production.

EQ: How would you describe your journey in music so far, are there any notable lessons you can share with emerging artists hoping to following your footsteps?

L: The journey so far has been a magical whirlwind and I’m only just beginning, it’s a constant test of patience and self belief. Its been beautiful to see my music develop and my style come into its own, I noticed this change happen when I became more confident in myself, when I was able just be without expectations I found that this was reelected in my performing and my music. My advice to emerging artists would be really to just be yourself and stay authentic, to also take opportunities that come, you really do learn on the way and don’t put too much pressure on yourself, allow yourself to not be the best when you begin and have gratitude to yourself for starting.

“…It’s like a battle of wanting to leave someone but there still being so much love, and this is what I wanted to portray in the visual.”

- LALITA

EQ: Your new track ‘Honourable’ is out now, and you also creative directed and directed the visuals which is amazing! What was your inspiration behind the project?

L: My inspiration was to just capture emotion in a very raw and beautiful way. I had the idea in my mind of creating a visual that would be super minimal so that the story behind the track could be seen through simplistic shots and movement. My concept was to show vulnerability within a relationship, the different scenarios we undergo when struggling to find peace with our partners. It’s like a battle of wanting to leave someone but there still being so much love and this is what I wanted to portray in the visual. My favourite shot is where cookie (male actor) is seen in a very vulnerable manner, he even sheds a tear, for me that was everything as that’s what I wanted to shine light on the most – the beauty within vulnerability, it’s rare to see so much of that these days. I was lucky enough to have two great friends aid in manifesting my vision with their acting and videography skills. It was an emotional day.

EQ: And finally, what have you been up to during lockdown, and what can we look forward to seeing from you once normal life resumes?

L: Wow, where to begin. I’ve been writing a LOT; it became much more of therapy for me than anything else over this period. I’ve finally began to learn editing and have created my first video edit for one of my tracks which will be released as a small project for you guys very shortly, date tbc but will for sure be with you this summer! Of course, making new music, writing about topics which are very personal and curating a timeline of releases which I’m super excited about! Besides music, I’ve also been taking this time to really be still and allow my elf to free flow into each day listening to my body and mind, really getting to really know myself lol, solitude never felt so good. When this is over expect GIGS, lots of gigs, obviously no live gigs are confirmed right now but I’m most excited about being able to perform live again and of course NEW MUSIC!
