'5 Questions With': Lost Girl
As a genre that continues to endure through era upon era of British musical evolution, UK Garage has been a staple sound of the country’s party culture for decades...

For a new generation of young people whose faint nostalgia for the underground musical movement has been passed down by their parents, the emanant sounds of T2’s “Heartbroken” or Sweet Female Attitude’s “Flowers” are enough to get the club jumpy; always evoking a feel-good atmosphere with their characteristically hyperactive baselines and infectious modulated vocals. Back in February, when Reading hailing songstress Lost Girl entered the scene with her UKG-inspired debut single “I Won’t Give Up”, she brought with her a glimmer of that nostalgia, as well as exciting new prospects for a rejuvenation of the popularised genre for a contemporary audience.
Having released her sophomore offering in October, the rising talent continues to cement her future-forward approach to Garage experimentations with “Lazy Love”, an evocative club- banger featuring drill music’s most sought-after female voice - Ivorian Doll. Despite the global landscape this year effectively hindering Lost Girl’s propensity for club domination, there’s no doubt that she’s put in the work to define her lane sonically, setting herself up for a mind-blowing 2021. In anticipation of her unequivocal rise, EQUATE recently caught up with Lost Girl to talk about her inherent love of UK Garage, girl-power collaborations and most importantly, new music.

Interview by Tahirah Thomas
EQ: Hey Lost Girl! Correct us if we’re wrong, but we heard that you have quite the musical legacy. Is it true that the late, great Aaliyah Haughton (R.I.P) is your cousin?
LG: Well…I’ve got to be honest [laughs], I made an Instagram post a while back as a bit of banter, it was a look-alike video where I blended old photos of Aaliyah with my own and captioned it something like “Did you know Aaliyah Haughton is my third cousin?”. All of a sudden, everyone started messaging me asking if it was true… it’s not! [laughs]. I do wish it was true though, she’s so legendary - I hope I can be even half of the artist she was one day!
EQ: The likeness is 100% there – If you hadn’t told us we would have ran with it too [laughs]! We’re loving the new track “Lazy Love ft Ivorian Doll” - it’s got an utterly infectious Y2K Garage feel. Are there any artists from that era in music who inspired the direction you took for the song?
LG: Wow – thanks! I really appreciate everyone who’s taken the time to give it a spin. I love UK Garage, it’s always been the go-to genre for me and my friends to pre-drink and get ready too; it’s the UK’s OG party music after all, so we’re always banging it out. I guess my love for the genre stems from growing up with it always being played in my household, so it felt quite natural when taking that direction for “Lazy Love” - I didn’t have to overthink it at all.

EQ: Tell us more about the recording process. How did you link up with Ivorian Doll for the track and what was it like working with another up-and-coming female artist?
LG: Oh, working with IVD was super lit - I literally love that girl! I feel like she made the process seem so easy, she’s got super fun energy and we organically developed a friendship throughout the process which is really special. I think it’s time for more female collabs in the UK; everything just feels better when we work together.
EQ: Yeah, girl-power is always a vibe! What would you say are some of your top tips when it comes to dealing with a lazy lover? Should us girls stick out our ‘situationships’, or simply put people who can’t see our worth right in the bin?
LG: I feel like there are loads of ways to combat dealing with a lazy lover. I think communication is key, being open to discussing the problems you have with your other half and trying to pinpoint the issue is always helpful. Also, compromise is super important when trying to figure out if the issue is even worth stressing over. To be fair, if you do hit a wall where you feel like the relationship is no longer serving you, I’d say that’s the time when you should bin it. After all, sometimes the love just isn’t strong enough; it should never feel like you’re compromising your sanity at the end of the day.
EQ:…so true; that’s great advice. To close off, what would you say are your biggest hopes for 2021? Are you planning any exciting projects for the year ahead?
LG: I just want to be healthy, happy and continue spreading the love going into 2021, you know? I definitely want to keep honing my craft and put more music out too. Actually, at the beginning of next year, I’ll be dropping some new heat and I can’t wait for you all to hear it so, watch this space.
