'5 Questions With': Mathilda Homer
"The feeling after a show, I don’t think I could ever forget. If you know you’ve done a good performance, you have this high that you couldn’t get from anything else."
After releasing her highly successful single ‘Rock Bottom‘ and last years critically acclaimed EP ‘Dear Life’, singer-songwriter Mathilda Homer is now following up with another gorgeous offering. ‘I’m Sorry‘ again showcases the singer’s personal and honest storytelling by addressing a theme that many will be familiar with. Due to her skilful lyrical and sonic artistic abilities, Mathilda has been able to consistently build up a steady and loyal fanbase which led to her selling out and upgrading her London show at the OMEARA in only under 24 hours. We had a chat with her about her music video for ‘I’m Sorry‘, her favourite part of music and more.

EQ: Hey Mathilda. What is your first musical memory?
M: Hi!!! My first musical memory was lying in bed on school nights and hearing my parents and their band practicing late into the night.
I knew I was meant to be asleep, but sometimes I’d sneak down and sit on the stairs and spy on them.
EQ: What’s your favourite part of being an artist - is it the songwriting, performing, …?
M: Well, I can’t even remember what it’s like to perform now!! But the feeling after a show, I don’t think I could ever forget. If you know you’ve done a good performance, you have this high that you couldn’t get from anything else. So I would say, performing.
“I love coming off stage and meeting all the people that take the time to listen to my songs, that’s actually probably my favourite part“

EQ: I enjoyed listening to your new single ‘I’m Sorry’ - can you talk us through the lyrical meaning behind it?
M: I’m glad you like it. The song is basically about having an internal battle with being able to talk about the things that are making you unhappy. You don’t want to bring up issues because it makes things harder to talk about, so you always end up just apologising. It seems like the easiest option. To apologise and move on.
EQ: Where did the idea for the creative direction for the video come about?
M: The concept of the video is simple. It’s me, sitting down with someone, maybe they’re a lover or a friend, and having a really difficult conversation. The lights go from day to night, showing that these things can feel like they are taking forever.
EQ: You’ve also just announced your live shows for the end of the year. What can your audience expect when they come to a Mathilda show?
M: Yes, I can’t wait to perform again. They can expect an evening of lots of new material, little bit of dancing, and some good chats. I love coming off stage and meeting all the people that take the time to listen to my songs, that’s actually probably my favourite part.
