'5 Questions With': Peyton

"To be in such a place to shoot something that was going to be a major steppingstone on the path of my journey as a recording artist and performer is beyond comforting and powerful"

Born and raised in Texas, singer-songwriter Peyton grew up surrounded by a rich musical heritage. Already when she was just five years old, she started playing the violin and got heavily inspired by her late-grandmother, Grammy-nominated Jazz singer Theola Booker. Fast forward and Peyton is a key figure within Houston’s artist community, both of her singles ‘Sweet Honey‘ and ‘Lifeline‘ have been featured on the prominent HBO’s series Insecure and her fanbase is ever-growing due to her gorgeous, genre-defying sound. Recently, she has released her new single ‘Let It Flow’, featuring rapper Brice Blanco, which is equally the first offering off her upcoming debut album ‘PSA‘, out on July 23rd. We’ve had a great chat with her about collaborating with Blanco, the process of filming the visuals for her single and much more.

EQ: Hey Peyton, good to meet you. You’ve had an exciting musical journey already, what’s been your most memorable moments as of yet?

P: The most memorable moment was when both of my songs “Sweet Honey” and “Lifeline” were featured on the HBO series “Insecure”. Even though everything was finalized, I was so nervous and had this nightmare after telling all my family and friends that “Sweet Honey” wouldn’t be featured. On premiere night, my parents and I were watching as I anxiously anticipated to hear it. Sure enough, in the first song on the opening scene, I heard a record drop and we all screamed. Then I checked Twitter and saw that Issa Rae mentioned me, telling me why she selected “Sweet Honey” and how she has been a supporter of me since the very start when I was 17. That moment gave me such a natural high and was so inspiring. I live for moments like that and don’t take them for granted.

EQ: You shot the music video to “Let It Flow” in your mother’s hometown, Liberty. Can you talk us through the whole filming process?

P: My vision for “Let It Flow” was to create a representation of following your own path and finding comfort in that regardless of your surroundings. My team and I had a general idea and drew visual inspiration from the music videos for OutKast’s “Prototype” and Sonder’sToo Fast.” As you can see in the video, the cowgirl and cowboy were far more skilled than me in riding and doing tricks. I still stayed in my own lane and kept things calm and cool. It was a very surreal experience because this is a place that I consider to be my second home and feel the most comfort in. To be in such a place to shoot something that was going to be a major steppingstone on the path of my journey as a recording artist and performer is beyond comforting and powerful. My family gives me strength and to have them there was a very beautiful experience. It was very easy and so fun to be on set. There was truly never a dull moment.

“Many musicians in Houston have a sound that is unworldly or beyond their time because of their exposure to different sounds. Houston has shaped my sound in a way that is sonically understandable but not easily replicated.”

EQ: How has growing up in Houston, TX, shaped you as an artist in general?

P: Houston is a melting pot of culture and a very inviting city. Growing up in Houston, especially growing up in various parts of the city, has exposed me to many cultures and all of the beauty a city has to offer. It’s a very accepting place where there is no harm in fusing cultures. With that being said, many musicians in Houston have a sound that is unworldly or beyond their time because of their exposure to different sounds. Houston has shaped my sound in a way that is sonically understandable but not easily replicated.

EQ: What was the collaboration with Brice Blanco like, how did you both first meet?

P: Brice Blanco and I met through mutual friends, and I was immediately drawn to his sound and his good spirit. I thought “Wow! This guy so nice and has such a classic sound.” I believe it very important to surround yourself with unique individuals who are trying to make their mark on the world uniquely and positively. Since we met, we have been trying to lock down a track. So when I began “Let It Flow”, I just knew he would be a perfect fit.

EQ: You’re due to release your debut album, exciting times! What can we expect from it, is it similar vibes to “Let It Flow”?

P: My forthcoming album “PSA” is a genre-bending experience that will be coming July 23rd and I am beyond excited. You can expect to hear songs that fuse Dream pop, R&B, hip hop, classical singing and soft trap, classic soul, alt-pop, alt R&B, and many more genres combined. No song is just alike, but in every song, you can expect to hear sounds with memorable bass lines, moving drum lines, captivating vocals, and many meaningful messages.
