Harlem native Porsh Bet$ shared his debut EP ‘I Used To Think Forever’ yesterday, a 6-track project which is a true testament to his determination and versatile artistry. Putting trust in himself and the universe, Porsh had confidence that his career in music would work out - after dropping out of college after two months, he started taking songwriting more seriously, and ultimately uploaded them on SoundCloud. When his first track reached 100 plays, he knew he had an audience that could increase even more and kept going. But also his friends were confident - when his high school friend sent Porsh’s first track to her uncle, KoOoLkOjAk (whose credits include Kesha, Nicki Minaj and Doja Cat), things started to get really interesting as he travelled across the States to Los Angeles where he then worked with him on his EP. We speak to Porsh Bet$ about his EP, what inspires him and more.

EQ: How did you first get into music?
P: Pretty random, I went to a friend’s house who made music and I was like ‘yo lemme make a song.’ So I got some random Partynextdoor type beat from YouTube and probably took 30 minutes to record it. Then I uploaded it on SoundCloud the same night. I made the cover art on my phone, it was all just in the moment.
EQ: Has your upbringing influenced you music-wise in any way?
P: I’d say yes and no, I would always watch Michael Jackson music videos with my mom and she would play a lot of older R&B music and stuff at home. My grandma sings in her church choir and always tried to get me to take piano lessons but I was not having it. Music has kinda always been around me but I was a spectator up until now.
EQ: So tell us all about your debut EP! What was your creative process for it?
P: Just ups and downs, what I was going through at the time inspired a lot of the songs. Translating some of those feelings into more imaginative scenarios. Also, the seasons really played a role in how I thought about the track-listing and mood of the project.

EQ: Do you have a personal favourite off of your EP?
P: It changes a lot but right now “Handle”.
EQ: Last but not least, is there anything else you’re working on that you can share with us?
P: A mixtape! Vote for Porsh.
