'5 Questions With': Punkband
"...If it was left up to us someone would probably end up getting seriously hurt or sued"
Meet Punkband - the up-and-coming two-piece that should be on your radar!
Formed by guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Alex Cook and Toby Ergatoudis, the duo were tired and bored of the current state of the music industry. Then, after watching the The Filth And The Fury documentary, one thing led to another - and Punkband was born. After their successful single releases ‘Kick It Up‘, ‘Businessman‘ and ‘abcabcabcabcabc‘, they now return with a new banger. Titled ‘Red Rag To A Bull’, the track cleverly addresses the repetitive 9-5 cycle and virtually takes us back to the glorious days of the punk rock era…

Words & Interview by Antonia Kuenzel
EQ: First of all, Toby you managed Alex previously - how did you guys meet initially?
P: I used to be an a&r and had an interest in new bands and came to a gig that Alex was playing at in Kings Cross. I thought they were alright and got them a deal, did a few years of managing but i was so young and didn’t really know what i was doing. Anyway, the band fell apart in 2019 and we started writing our own shit.
EQ: Punkband was born out of your ‘boredom with the state of music’ - What do you think needs changing in the industry?
P: Less politics and more laughs. Theres no characters in the biz anymore, or at least not like there used to be, people are taking themselves too seriously.
EQ: Your upcoming single ‘Red Rag To A Bull’ is all about the rat race and 9-5 cycle. Was there a particular moment in your lives as well when you decided not to put up with that anymore?
P: We’ve all worked shitty jobs with shitty bosses, its all part and parcel of being young. I guess we saw an opportunity to get out of the rat race, of day to day repetition and we’re running with it.

EQ: I also love how you’ve portrayed the theme in the visuals. Do you plan videos and creative concepts all together, or do you split everything?
P: We have a vague concept normally, which is usually pretty shit. We’ve been working with a filmmaker, called Ardo Cotones on the last few singles and he aces it. If it was left up to us someone would probably end up getting seriously hurt or sued.
EQ: So you’re due to perform at The Social for your headline show this summer - what can your fans expect at your live shows?
P: Unspeakable mayhem. It’s gonna be rawkus.
