'5 Questions With': Sweets

"Living in Manny now with only Newcastle to compare it to, I’m really happy where I’m at."

Following up from previously released ‘I’m Not Coming Home‘, Newcastle-born and now Manchester-based artist Sweets is now returning with new single ‘Yellow‘, a track which brilliantly displays the contrasting realities of the night before and the morning after, based on his own experiences. With its psychedelic alt-pop-inspired and synth-laden production alongside Sweets‘ effortless lyrical abilities, the song highlights a new, more melodic side of his artistry. We spoke to him about Manchester’s music scene, the inspiration behind ‘Yellow‘ and much more.

EQ: What’s your earliest musical memory?

S: My earliest memory of really feeling passionately about music was in my dad’s car around the age of ten. The song ‘Handlebars‘ by the Flobots was playing and, while I was left in the car on my own for a few minutes, I turned the song up as loud as I could and I remember it transported me away and made the world feel like an exciting and special place.

EQ: You were born in Newcastle and now based in Manchester - obviously the music scene is now super vibrant over there but do you ever feel like you’re missing out not living in London as an artist?

S: Living in Manny now with only Newcastle to compare it to, I’m really happy where I’m at. There’s about ten times the small venues and music opportunities in Manny than there is in Newcastle, so I’m not thinking about London just yet.

“It’s all very personal to me, referencing my actual mates and actual nights of my life.”

EQ: Can you talk us through your latest single ‘Yellow’?

S: ‘Yellow‘ is a storytelling song about the feeling of the night before in contrast with the feeling the next morning, comparing the same situations before and after a night of no sleep. It’s all very personal to me, referencing my actual mates and actual nights of my life.

EQ: Soon you’ll be gracing the stage at various festivals. What can your fans expect from a Sweets live show?

S: A fan can expect a lot of energy, a lot of hard unreleased music and a few drinks with me afterwards.

EQ: Is there anything else that you’re working on that you can share with us?

S: I’ve got so much exiting music on the way including my debut EP and a joint EP with the unreal Luke Royalty. So excited for the future.
