'Be persistent, things don’t happen overnight. It is so important to be ambitious as that’s the only way you move forward but what I’ve learnt more over time is that is equally important to manage your expectations, so you don’t lose hope.'

Edition Two - Amelia Dimoldenberg - Order Now
Meet Amelia Dimoldenberg, resident queen of sarcasm, CEO of the YouTube sensation ‘Chicken Shop Date’, and Drake aficionado (read: stalker). Catching up with the writer and presenter between her busy filming schedules and summer of festivals and events, EQUATE sat down for a few minutes to talk about Amelia Dimoldenberg, the life before the fame, and what inspired her ascent into the spotlight.
EQ: For anyone who hasn’t come across you, how would you describe yourself and what you do?
AD: I am a writer, performer and CEO of Chicken Shop Date.
EQ: Where did you grow up?
AD: London NW1.
EQ: What was it like for you growing up? How would you describe yourself then vs. now?
AD: I loved my childhood, sometimes I wish I could go back to it – not a care in the world! Actually, that’s a lie, I cared about a lot of things, mainly making friends as I wasn’t that popular when I first started secondary school. I had glasses and braces – wasn’t the best combination for a 13-year-old.
EQ: Did you enjoy school? What did you study?
AD: I loved school. I studied all the usual subjects but for A Level I did English, Art, Politics and IT (lol I was an IT scholar at school, I have no idea why because I am so bad with technology but anyway that meant I had to take it for AS level). I was in all of the after-school clubs and by Year 10 I had loads of great friends, before that…not so many. At school prize-giving assemblies I would usually win the prizes for ‘effort’ rather than ‘achievement’ which says it all, really.
EQ: What sound-tracked your childhood growing up, describe some of your early experiences listening to music in the house?
AD: The soundtrack to my childhood was S Club 7, Britney Spears, Busted and McFly. My parents really only listen to music from the ‘60s and ‘70s so I am a huge Fleetwood Mac fan because of them. Joni Mitchell is also a favourite; I am named after one of her songs. We also had a Motown compilation CD that my sister and I used to play on repeat and choreographed dance routines to the songs like ‘Tears of a Clown’ and ‘Baby Love’ by The Supremes for our parents to watch. Only realising now how awful that must have been.
EQ: If you could choose an artist or entertainer, dead or alive to have dinner (or a ‘date’) whom would it be and why?
AD: Drake or J Hus because he’s actually said yes, and I’ve now been waiting over 2 years for it to actually happen so that one is a must.
EQ: What advice would you give to your younger self or anyone wanting to follow your footsteps?
AD: Be persistent, things don’t happen overnight. It is so important to be ambitious as that’s the only way you move forward but what I’ve learnt more over time is that is equally important to manage your expectations, so you don’t lose hope. I spend so much time trying to persuade people that my ideas are worthwhile, it can be so draining but you can’t stop - you’ll get there in the end.
EQ: Your unique demeanour on camera has certainly earned you praise, did it come naturally or was this something you had to craft over the years?
AD: I’m 90% sure I was born sarcastic.
EQ: What is the ultimate goal for you career wise?
AD: To get Drake on Chicken Shop Date then I can retire.
