Born and raised in Lithuania, songstress Beatrich certainly didn’t take a ‘conventional’ route to get to the position that she’s in now. Living in a secluded area while growing up, there wasn’t much of a music scene around - hence, when she turned 17 years old, Beatrich made the decision to run away from home and pursue a career as a singer elsewhere. When she eventually moved to London, she finally found her true creative calling and got inspired by the vibrant community. Fast forward and she now has over a million streams under her belt, performed in multiple countries such as China and is an award-winning singer. Only recently, she has released her brand new single ‘Same Song’ - an ode to her journey and all its involved emotions so far. The single marks her first release since lockdown and brilliantly captures the evolution of her sound over the past year. We caught up with Beatrich and spoke about how growing up in Lithuania shaped her as an artist, moving to London, and her new single.

Words & Interview by Antonia Kuenzel

EQ: Hi Beatrich! So nice to meet you. Your story is fascinating. You pursued music when you were 17 years old. How was the music scene in Lithuania growing up?

B: When I first started doing music, it all went quite quick and unexpected. I was kind of living my dream, playing huge arenas, winning awards and even on the cover of PEOPLE Lithuania. It was crazy and even though I was working really hard, I was doing what made me happy so it became like a lifestyle to me.

EQ: How did your family and friends respond when you told them about pursuing a career in music?

B: My parents always saw me as a doctor so the day after I graduated from school I was quite nervous to break the news to them. The music industry is intense and they had said previously that they wanted me to have an easier life. It wasn’t sugar and spice and everything nice in the beginning but now they really warmed to the idea that this is the path that I have chosen and this is exactly what I want to do. Most importantly, it makes me truly happy.

EQ: Was music always something you wanted to do or was your passion for singing something you discovered by chance?

B: I loved singing from a very early age and always wanted to learn as many musical instruments as I could. I grew up in a house in the middle of a forest in the small town of Silute in Lithuania. As you can imagine, I didn’t really have loads of neighbours kids to play with so I used to spend my summers writing songs while playing my older sister’s piano. As much as it was extremely isolated, I had an amazing childhood and it was probably one of the main reasons I started looking into music much more seriously. Straight after learning the piano basics I jumped to violin and then got my very first guitar. Not long after that, I started uploading 15 seconds music covers on Instagram.. and look! Here we are.

EQ: Fast forward and you are now based in London with an impressive journey behind you. What’s been the most challenging part for you to get to where you are now?

B: One of the most challenging parts was probably leaving my family and friends behind and moving to a big city like London where I didn’t know anyone else apart from my team. I immediately had to jump out of my comfort zone but I knew this was where I needed to be. I needed to reclaim complete control of my artistry and make music that truly defined me.

EQ: Yeah, I can imagine. What was your most exciting ‘pinch me’ moment as of yet?

B: The most exciting “pinch me” moment was definitely at the Rye music festival in Beijing, China. I hadn’t seen so many people in one place before. I never could have dreamed that I would be performing to 30,000 people. The feeling was absolutely indescribable.

EQ: You have released a brand new single on May 14th - so exciting, what can you tell us about it?

B: I can’t even tell you how excited and nervous I am. Writing a song is one thing, but then putting it out there for everyone to judge is quite nerve-wracking. I write my songs as if I’m writing in my diary so all of them are filled with my own experience and thoughts which sometimes can put me in a very vulnerable place. My new single “Same Song” is extremely meaningful to me as I am talking about a pattern that I accidentally got myself into and how hard it is sometimes to get away from a relationship that isn’t right for you.

EQ: The video showcases the scenario of being stuck in a loop - is that inspired by your time in Lithuania? I think the video captures the emotions of the single brilliantly.

B: The video and the song itself is indeed about being stuck in some sort of a loop or a pattern in a relationship that you just cant find a way out of. You are trying to find the right turn but whatever you do leads you to the same outcome as it did before. You’re just “singing the same song, keep on repeating the same wrongs”. It could probably compare to an addiction but you are addicted to an emotionally unavailable person.

“… I write my songs as if I’m writing in my diary so all of them are filled with my own experience and thoughts which sometimes can put me in a very vulnerable place..”

EQ: I was wondering what your creative process is as well when planning a concept or writing a new song?

B: Everything that I use in my songs come from my own experience. The stories behind them are all different. I don’t really have a certain way of how I write songs as sometimes I just think of the lyrics when I least expect it. Other times, I just play something on my guitar and I already know what I want to say. It’s always something different and that’s what makes each creative process for a song so special to me.

EQ: You’ve got a huge fanbase all over the world - when this pandemic is over, do you think a world tour is in the cards or a headline show in London? We’d love to see you perform!

B: Performing is one of my favourite things to do. Whenever I get on the stage, my whole personality changes. I feel like a fish in water. I played a headline show at the Camden Assembly London in November 2019. Feels like a lifetime ago! I had some UK festival plans last year too. I cannot wait to get back on stage. It’s too soon to say now but definitely hope to have some shows at the end of the year around the UK and some summer festival dates too!

EQ: Last but not least, is there anything you are working on, such as an EP or album, at the moment?

B: There is a steady stream of singles coming up in the next few months, which is going to be leading to an EP at the end of the year. I put my whole heart into my songs and I can’t wait for everyone to hear them!
