Last night, South-London native, Dave, solidified his status as the “Best UK Rapper on the Rise” after taking home the 2020 Brit Awards for Best Album of the Year, for his debut album Psychodrama.
The rapper dominated the night with a standout performance of his hit single, “Black”, with powerful lyricisms and equally powerful visuals highlighting the inequalities faced by minorities, and institutional injustice too. With a special never-before-heard verse, Dave praised the courage and bravery of the London Bride terror attack victim, Jack Merritt, who devoted his life to rehabilitation of reformed criminals, petitioned for justice for the surviving victims of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, reparations for members of the Windrush generation, and even pointed to the unjust treatment of (former) Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.
It’s a bold move for rappers and artists to use their voices for a wider cause, but describing himself as “no different” to the young “kings and queens chasing their dream” he dedicated his award to, he encouraged the new and aspiring generation of artists saying “I’m just a guy and everything I’m sating is a fact, you can do anything that you put your mind to.”
After taking home the 2019 Hyundai Mercury prize, Dave’s ascent into stardom shows no signs of slowing down.
