Edition Two - Delilah Montagu - Order Now

For Delilah Montagu, music has always been a fundamental form of expression, and the rising star sat down with EQUATE to discuss this creative art form, her inspirations, and her journey in the industry thus far. We also took a dive into a day-in-the-life and discussed career milestones with the 21-year-old singer-songwriter, and debut EP ‘Gold’. Delilah Montagu has had a busy year with features on tracks such as on David Guetta and Black Coffee’s ‘Drive’, and a bustling festival season, performing this summer at All Points East.

Delilah: “Music is the skeleton of my life - it’s the way I process how I feel and express how I feel.”

EQ: Who is ‘Delilah Montagu’?

DM: I’m not entirely sure yet, I’m still figuring that one out.

EQ: You started creating music at such a young age, what drew you to the industry, and better yet, a career in it?

DM: I have always written music, so it was my initial love for writing that brought out my voice and wanting to have a career in music. I wanted my music to be heard by people. Listening to records growing up had such a powerful impact on me, so I’ve always thought that if my music could do the same for other people that would be very cool.

EQ: Who was your biggest musical inspiration growing up?

DM: My biggest inspirations writing wise were Leonard Cohen and Carole King. I must have listened to the album ‘Tapestry’ every day for a good 5 years, for me the melodies and song craft are insane on that album. I read a lot of Leonard Cohen’s poetry, his lyricism blows my mind and makes me want to write.

EQ: Describe your sound and what makes it unique?

DM: I am very influenced by classic songwriters, so mixing that style of writing with sounds that we have now, that they didn’t have back then, feels really exciting and new to me.

EQ: What does music mean to you?

DM: Music is the skeleton of my life - it’s the way I process how I feel and express how I feel. Not entirely sure what would’ve happened to me if music didn’t exist.

EQ: Would you say musical art is your only form of creative expression? If not, what are your other creative outlets?

DM: Music has always been my way of expressing myself, I write a lot too, usually just pages of nothing, words and poetry. That stuff is just for me though.

EQ: What is one of your guilty pleasures?

DM: I have seen EVERY Dinner Date episode there is.

EQ: What is an average day in the life of Delilah?

DM: I actually have a complete lack of routine in my life, which I’m trying to create at the moment, because I think it would make everything a bit easier to manage. But I guess on a good day I get up, go swimming, go to the studio. It’s a pretty granny-like lifestyle but I’m into it [laughs].

EQ: What’s been the defining moment of your career so far? Either the best, or something that taught you a lesson?

DM: Going to South Africa to sing my song with Black Coffee was a beautiful life moment for me. I was terrified, but the amount of joy it brought me and so many others taught me a lot and has helped with the way I look at things now.

EQ: Apart from your own music, what is the best song on your playlist at the moment?

DM: I’m loving ‘All Because of You’ by Bill Withers at the moment. Huge bop!

EQ: And finally, tell us a something about yourself that no one else knows. An EQUATE exclusive.

DM: I’m addicted to orange squash, have at least 3 a day.
