Digital Cover Story 3: Josie Man
"I always write about love, even if it's self-love or love that I radiate."
Josie Man ‘aka’ AGroovyBooThang is the “All You Need Is Love” musician of the GenZ generation, as her loved-up, bubbly and chirpy music and persona reach the ears of thousands. Described as the 21-year-old who radiates passion and kindness, Josie is a force to be reckoned with and a talent to be celebrated. Describing her style as “just me as a music form, it’s what I would be if I were a piece of music,” and abstaining from putting her music in a “genre box” Josie explains “I think music is about expressing how you feel, how you are and what you wanna talk about.”
Growing up Josie was ultimately devoted to music, she was always listening to something, which sprouted into her career and overall ambition. “That feeling you get from being free with music, that’s what made me want to do it,” she states, and with being a shy child, Josie used music as a creative outlet to feel free, confident, and heard, which has brought her to where she stands today - making a huge impact within the industry.
“…music allowed me to be heard.”
The music Josie creates is “very much about love”, as love radiates off her and is what “drives her in everything she does”. Describing herself as a sensitive person she is also a hugely caring individual who likes to be the person people can come to, “I’d rather make someone else feel happy, even if I feel a bit sad” the songstress muses. All these traits are evident and highly reflected in Josie’s music – her dreamy vocals and sensitive tone create a kind-hearted melody that uplifts you into the expressive and sparkling world of AGroovyBooThang.
Delving into the motive behind the persona, one thing is fundamentally clear – Josie wants her music to “spread love, happiness, kindness and goosebumps,” which is exactly what it does. Now having amassed over 250,000 monthly listeners on Spotify alone, she expressed that she “still can’t believe that people listen to my music”, describing it as one of the biggest achievements of hers.
With music which is remarkably unique and signature to her, on the release of her most recent single ‘Cuts & Bruises’, the songstress gushed that is about the love shared between her and her boyfriend, “since he’s come into my life, his love heals me in ways like it never has before. It talks about the things that we do, and that he heals me with his love.”
“I think music is about expressing how you feel, how you are and what you wanna talk about.”
On her latest track ‘Little Space For Me’, this focuses on the sensitive side of Josie and is inspired by her parents and family. “I have three sisters and now I’m an adult I feel like life is really difficult, it’s amazing how my parents made space to bring up four children. I always think about how they did it as this life is not easy, it’s not fun all the time.”Josie says the track outlines how much she loves and appreciates them, which is the reflection of her kind-hearted and loving personality. And on the significance of the music video filmed in a Chinese restaurant, “my dad’s Chinese and my mum’s English so they are both eating their traditional dishes” and in keeping with the personal touches she likes to include, Josie noted that within the visuals old family footage from her childhood were cameoed which she expresses “were really special to me.”
Josie Man is an artist you need on your playlists this summer, she envokes brightness, a kind spirit, and everything dreamy, musing: “I just want to make music that I love and that means something to me. I want to do things I love and whatever comes with it, comes.”
