Rising Irish artist Enda Gallery today releases the first teaser from his forthcoming EP, ‘Liberation’ with the lead single “Super Raw”, premiering today exclusively with EQUATE. Marking the start of a new beginning as he fully immerses himself into his new identity, the track is an ode to love as he opens up about intense feelings felt, so much so that the right words don’t come so easily, but the strong, longing feeling doesn’t subside. Having worked with a number of artists from Tolu Makay, Wilzee, and Strange Boy, Enda now navigates his own journey, as he emerges into the mainstream conscience. With newfound freedom and priding himself as being an artist with a real purpose, it’s an exciting time ahead for the multi-talented creator.

Speaking on the track he said: “Super Raw is a cry from that all-consuming love that devours you and all your peace in the flames of passion. A love that is both total and totally indescribable. So intense is the state that you feel a total chasm between you and your beloved. A love so intense you could not even speak of it and every moment became an epoch, every movement, every potential signal a great epoch. From that state comes the longing: “If I could just think of what to say you wouldn’t push me away, you’d bring me closer.”

Words & Interview by Danielle Temeng

EQ: Hi Enda, welcome to EQUATE! Can you tell us a little about how you got into music and when you realised that it was what you wanted to do long term?

E: I played instruments as a child and I got this little toy tape recorder for Christmas when I was about eight or ten and I started making little recordings on it. I figured out that if I got my dad’s one and put them up against each other and play one back while recording on the other, I could add a layer on top of the original. I was in Porto aged 21 travelling on my own with a guitar when I got the realisation: “I’m supposed to do music!”. It was very sudden and crystal clear. I had never played a show or released a song but that feeling came “boom!” and then I knew. It took me about 11 months to unravel a life that was going in a totally different direction and leave that all behind to start again at my beginnings making music my life.

EQ: If you could describe yourself and your sound in 3 words what would they be and why?

E: Soulful - because above all else I channel from the soul.

Healing - because every detail is nutritious and made with goodness, lyrics, sounds, the way instruments are played and mixed.

Brave - because I don’t care about what people think or about any genre and as I get more fluent in all these different genres, I’m going to be mixing with more and more abandon.

EQ: You’ve recently reinvented yourself as an artist - why did you feel this was important to do and what are the differences you feel in doing so?

E: It actually felt good and very painful at the same time. I cried a few times. It felt absolutely like a death. I had put only my best into the name I was using: delush and it became a very important friend and channel for me. My own name is also the name I used on my admin letters and in relating to my community. I have to accept with it all the things I’m not proud of as well as that which I can make perfect. However, I now feel totally beyond branding or names and I wanted to show up as my full self, a force of nature with all these different sides. An artist, a producer, a developer of others, a writer, a vocalist, a human being, a philosopher, and one equal member of the human family with a lot to contribute.

EQ: Your new single ‘Super Raw’ is out now, congratulations! What was the creative process behind this single?

E: Thank you! I’m buzzed! It’s the first track of the new era! I had a demo of this song from a few years ago that I loved. “Super Raw” and “Rough” (hence the name). The feeling around the song was also super raw because it was a time of being totally in love and yet unable to communicate it, feeling every bump in the road like a thousand daggers. This EP was my first time working with a producer rather than me producing it myself and so I showed Dennis Neuer, the producer, about 40 or 50 of my songs and he picked out a few that he adored, and we got to work. We added some guitars one night until like 5 am with David Lemaitre in Berlin and apart from that, the process was really intimate. The vocals are so intimate in the song that once they communicate the intention, the feeling, my motivation, my love, and the unrequitedness, it all fell into place.

EQ:…and in terms of your personal process are you someone who likes to work in solitude or collaboratively?

E: I think a few years ago I might have said alone but I’m enjoying more and more sharing these experiences with people. I love people and especially a certain few. It’s not only more fun to work on things with people who can talk about everything, but it also just feels totally like having fun and enjoying music and being alive for its own sake. I’m more and more into enjoying the process for itself. It should be healing and fun and intense and glorious, even if no-one gives a f*** about it in the end.

EQ: What can we expect from you for the remainder of 2021, are there any EQUATE exclusives you can let us in on?

E: It’s going to be a year filled to the brim with all I can give the world. These four songs on my upcoming EP ‘Liberation’, of which “Super Raw” is the first are total bangers. I have a collab with Childish Gambino’s producers and artists in their own right, Christian Rich coming up. A collab I just did with Niconé just got added to Solomun’s Spotify momentum list. I have more bangers every month after that and it is just getting started. I just produced an album for Strange Boy who is one of the greatest rappers in the world right now and the concept is something you’ll have never heard and I’m producing a few other super talented artists that will be truly great and fun to make. I hope I can get a short holiday at some point, but for now, I’m happy to keep burning.
