'We're all in the same boat. Except some of us have got a shit ton more toilet roll'

In the days since COVID-19 has dominated our screens, and mandatory self-isolation is being enforced globally, things can seem pretty bleak. With the recent announcement stating that all leisure activities, including: gyms, pubs, nightclubs, cinema’s, theatres and restaurants are being asked to close “as soon as they reasonably can”, the effort to enforce stricter social distancing measures to quell the spread of the outbreak is more prominent than ever. EQUATE took this time to catch up with our favourite artists and creatives for our ‘Isolation Files’ to see what they are doing to keep their spirits up in this time, and bring some positivity to our readers.

Writing for artists like Rita Ora, the aboutagirl guys (made up of Tom Mann and Lostboy), let us in on what their day-to-day in self-isolation looks like at the moment. The rising duo from London, are well-established pop writers and came together after they realised their shared desire to create their own alternative-contemporary pop music.

(aboutagirl: answers from Tom Mann)
EQ: Hey guys! What are you doing to stay busy right now?

AAG: We are both still writing and producing music remotely, so that has been keep us busy naturally. Plus Pete got a dog. It’s the size of a squirrel. So there’s that too. Actually, I’m not sure Pete is doing any work - just at home playing with his squirrel (not a euphemism).

EQ: What are the top three tracks on your playlist at the moment? Anything in particular you can’t take off repeat?

AAG: Dirty Blond - Temporary Fix, Jeremy Zucker - not ur friend, Christine & The Queens and Caroline Polacheck - La vita nuova. Also, that Harry Styles album is fucking good isn’t it.

EQ: What would you recommend we all tune into on Netflix/Amazon Prime?

AAG: Yep, the best time to binge watch and it’s guilt-free. The classic is Breaking Bad - if you’ve already seen it, probably just watch it again. It’s that good. First series of The Sinner is also a winner. Don’t Fuck With Cats if you fancy nearly throwing up. Love Is Blind if you want to see some dramatic Americans cry in a car-crash environment. Basically any crime/murder documentary. I’ve just started The Morning Show on Apple TV too which is great.

There’s loads more but maybe just watch anything that will take your mind off the shit show outdoors. Probs not the time to be watching any apocalyptic, end-of-the-world vibes. Although, A Quiet Place is great.

EQ: What’s a positive mantra that’s getting you through this time?

AAG: It’s obviously a tough and scary time for everybody, but it will make us stronger as a community. Health is now our first priority and we are being forced to think a little more outside the box; dream up new things and reinvent old ways. There has been a lot of selfishness, but ultimately I think the chaos is going to breed togetherness. We’ll pull through and come out the other side more connected than ever. We’re all in the same boat. Except some of us have got a shit ton more toilet roll.

EQ: With all the spare time, how are you tapping into your creativity?

AAG: We are so used to collaborating with other writers and friends on a daily basis that this self-isolation has put us in a slightly different headspace. Creating and writing on our own (individually) is not something we are used to and so we are out our comfort zone a little. It’s cool - we are making all kinds of things we wouldn’t have usually made.

EQ: First place you’ll head to when everyone comes out of isolation?

AAG: Well it’s day 4 of quarantine and it’s making us miss the simple things. Already feel like we haven’t seen our mates in about 5 years, so sitting in a pub somewhere with the football sounds ideal right now.

EQ: What can we look forward to hearing from you later in the year? Any exciting projects we should be looking out for?

AAG: Well we have our single “B-list” coming out today which we are super excited for. It’s the song in which we found our sound & identity for aboutagirl so we can’t wait for people to hear it. Other than that, we just wrote and produced “How To Be Lonely” for Rita Ora which came out last week and we have our own remix coming of that soon.

There’s plenty plans to release more aboutagirl music as well as other artists songs which we have been involved in making.
