Mantra: ‘I believe everything is happening for a reason’

In the days since COVID-19 has dominated our screens and mandatory self-isolation is being enforced globally, things can seem pretty bleak. EQUATE wanted to catch up with our favourite artists and creatives for our ‘Isolation Files’ to see what they are doing to keep their spirits up in this time, and bring some positivity to our readers.

The first artist we, at EQUATE caught up with is Los Angeles based composer, producer and musician Jordan Lawlor, (moniker: J.Laser). Formerly a member of French dream pop outfit M83, J.Laser fuses modern electronic production and sonic manipulation techniques with classic song writing and an innate pop sensibility.

EQ: Hi, Jordan!

J.L.: Hey guys!

EQ: What are you doing to stay busy right now?

J.L.: I’m working hard at my home studio. The feeling that the world is passing you by or FOMO as they call it can be a big inhibitor of creativity for me - so the fact the world has slowed down a bit is kind of a silver lining and a good opportunity to get lost in the internal world.

EQ: What are the top three tracks on your playlist at the moment? Anything in particular you can’t take of repeat?

J.L.: Home - Caribou; Breath Deeper - Tame Impala & Pink Ocean - The Voidz

EQ: What would you recommend we all tune into on Netflix/Amazon Prime?

J.L.: I’m loving Alex Garland’s new series on Hulu called ‘DEVS’. Also going through a huge anime phase - getting lost in the fantasy realm is good medicine with shows like ‘Death Note’ ‘Mob Psycho 100’ & ‘The Disastrous Life of Saiki K’

YouTube/Netflix

EQ: With so much content out there right now across socials, is there anything that has stood out to you that you can share?

J.L.: I’m not spending much time on socials these days, but I have noticed there’s a kinder attitude people are taking with each other both online and in real life. I think this possible existential threat has given us a firm reminder that we are all human and nothing is to be taken for granted.

EQ: Whats a positive mantra that’s getting you through this time?

J.L.: I’m working on a new song and the refrain is ‘I believe everything is happening for a reason’ repeated in the chorus ad nauseam (latin: “repeated to the point of nausea”), so I guess that’s the mantra for now!

EQ: With all the spare time, how are you tapping into your creativity?

J.L.: The increased stillness is palpable here in a LA - there’s a quiet that is both eerie and fascinating. It’s quite stimulating, many creative revelations come when there’s a paradigm shift of some kind. So I anticipate a whole tidal wave of great art coming out of people while they are in hermitage

EQ: First place you’ll head to when everyone comes out of isolation?

J.L.: I miss all of our favourite vegan restaurants in LA, most of the hikes and nature spots are open for now but I anticipate they’ll be closing soon too.

EQ: What can we look forward to hearing from you in the later in the year? Any exciting projects we should be looking out for?

We’re releasing our full EP on May 2nd and there will be another to follow shortly after that!

I’m working like crazy so there’s definitely going to be a lot psychedelia to come!
