i-Files: Talulah Ruby
"Everything moves in flow."

In the days since COVID-19 has dominated our screens, and mandatory self-isolation is being enforced globally, things can seem pretty bleak. With the recent announcement from Prime Minister, Boris Johnson effectively placing the UK into a lockdown, all non-essential travel has been restricted, and only urgent outings (including to buy essential food, medicine and exercise once a day). This change – which is set to last for a further 3 weeks and then will be reviewed - has been imposed as a way of ensuring social distancing measures used to quell the spread of the outbreak. EQUATE took this time to catch up with our favourite artists and creatives for our ‘Isolation Files’ to see what they are doing to keep their spirits up in this time and bring some positivity to our readers.
22-year-old soul artist Talulah Ruby encompasses a powerful and dynamic vocal style which remains at the forefront of her music. Releasing her intimate and powerful new single ‘The Deep’, this track along with her first two releases ‘Hot Water’ and ‘I Don’t Feel Like Me’ complete a trilogy of singles whose theme can ultimately be narrowed down to her constant search for a better space and environment. Released during lockdown, we spoke on her new single which eerily parallels the times were in now.
EQ: Hey Talulah! What are you doing to stay busy right now?
TR: Planning my next releases, cook off’s with my mum and focusing on my health.
EQ: What would you recommend we all tune into on Netflix/Amazon Prime?
TR: Unorthodox and ALL of the Studio Ghibli Films on Netflix. Modern Love on Amazon Prime.
EQ: With so much content out there right now across socials, is there anything that has stood out to you that you can share?
The obvious would be James Blake’s live streams and Q&A…But I think now is the perfect time to do research and get creative about what you search on Google.
EQ: What are the top three tracks on your playlist at the moment?
TR: ‘Dolerme’ by Rosalia
‘CYANIDE’ by Daniel Caesar
‘PDLIF’ by Bon Iver

EQ: Whats a positive mantra that’s getting you through this time?
TR: Everything moves in flow. It feels completely surreal that I released ‘The Deep’ just in the midst of when the world is questioning what’s “normal” and who we are as individuals and communities. It almost feels eerily relevant because it carries so much spirit surrounding transformation and learning to adapt in a new environment - the whole planet is questioning our existentialism and this song is exactly that. A search for truth and finally realising that everything really does moves in flow. ‘The Deep’ is coming out during a major transformational period of my own personal life and also the whole globe.

EQ: With all the spare time, how are you tapping into your creativity?
TR: I’m actually able to feel less guilty about being creative so I find myself being much more so than normally. I’ve been testing different ways of listening to music out. So I submerge my head in the bath to listen to songs that inspire me. To see if I hear any parts that I didn’t notice before. This is a great trick for producers.
EQ: First place you’ll head to when everyone comes out of isolation?
TR: The Studio. No doubt.
EQ: What can we look forward to hearing from you in the later in the year? Any exciting projects we should be looking out for?
TR: Lots - this is the year! My latest release concludes my first collection of singles, but not quite the last piece of the puzzle - so now it’s time for a different wave - and I think you’ll be excited when you see the full picture.
