EQ: Who is ‘Kara Marni’ and how did you come up with your stage name?

KM: It’s actually my surname written as one word, I liked the ring of it better than my first name, so I split it into 2, Kara Marni!

EQ: Who was your biggest musical inspiration growing up?

KM: It’s hard to pick one, but Minnie Riperton and Diana Ross were definitely big ones and then more recently Amy [Winehouse] and Lauryn Hill.

EQ: When did you discover music was what you wanted to do for the rest of your life?

KM: A defining moment for me was when my Dad played me Roberta Flack’s ‘First Time I Ever Saw Your Face’ in his music room, I felt something I hadn’t felt until then, it was a sense of awe that left me feeling really inspired.

EQ: You’re a strong female voice, and we hear that translate a lot through your music. Where do you get your inspiration from?

KM: I guess it has come from the way I’ve been brought up; my mum is the strongest person I know, and she’s always told me to know my worth and to never settle for less than what I deserve.

EQ: What would you say keeps you grounded in this fast-paced industry?

KM: My family and best friends, without them I don’t think I could cope!

EQ: What are two things you enjoy most about being a musician?

KM: Being able to do what I love every day, and when I get messages or letters about how my music has impacted someone’s life/helped them through a difficult situation.

EQ: Other than your own music, what is currently top of your playlist at the moment?

KM: Snoh Aalegra’s new album, Daniel Caesar & Sabrina Claudio.

EQ: What is one of your guilty pleasures?

KM: Eating anything and everything. I’m Greek so am a huge foodie!

EQ: You write all of your own songs, what’s your creative process like?

KM: It varies, which keeps its exciting, but usually it starts with something I want to write about, a concept, then the melody and lyrics follow.

EQ: How would you describe your style of music and how has this developed since you got your start in the industry?

KM: I would describe it as soul R&B. My music has developed as I’ve grown up listening to and discovering more music and just living my life…being able to draw from more experiences.

EQ: If you could choose and artist, dead or alive to have dinner with who would it be, and why?

KM: Aretha Franklin – she is an absolute soul legend and I am so gutted that I didn’t get the chance to even see her play live!
