EQUATE Introducing Love Truls

"I was inspired by all the great music I was feeded growing up, everything between classical music to indie music from Sweden."

Meet Sweden’s new rising star - Love Truls, the brainchild of Truls Söderman Carlberg. Only 18 years old, the singer songwriter started writing songs when he was just a 4 years old, and over the years quickly established himself as the voice of a generation by speaking up about all the struggles and angst 21-century teenagers go through when growing up in the most relatable way.

Just last week, he released his highly anticipated EP ‘Kantande Wanai‘ - Japanese for ‘It Isn’t Easy’. We had a chat with him to speak about all things EP, music and more.

EQ: Hi Love Truls, first of all how did you get started in music?

LT: Music has always been a part of my life since I was a kid. Both my parents are musicians and it has been the natural thing to do. I started making my own music for real when my dad gave me an I-rig when i was about 15 years old and that was when I really discovered the magic of creating.

EQ: You’re only 18years old and wrote your first songs when you were 15/16 years old. Who or what were your main sources of inspiration musically?

LT: One of my earliest inspirations was Mac Demarco and I think he was a main factor to me really wanting to create and produce music. And of course I was inspired by all the great music I was feeded growing up, everything between classical music to indie music from Sweden.

EQ: I love your artist name, it’s such a clever combination I think. When you were thinking about your artist name, did that name (adding Love) just come naturally to you?

LT: Thank you! Yes of course. Love is the meaning of life.

EQ: Coming from Sweden, I’m intrigued how the music scene over there was when you were growing up? Did it shape you in any way?

LT: I don’t think that Swedish music has affected me that much at all actually. And the music scene in Sweden is not that interesting so I think I’ve just always looked up to the international music scene.

EQ: Your debut EP Kantande Wanai is out on June 4th, what’s the inspiration behind the Japanese title? Do you have a certain connection to Japanese culture?

LT: No not really, I have always thought that the Japanese culture has seemed interesting but I don’t really know anything about Japan. I really just thought it sounded cool.

Can you already unveil what we can expect in the EP? How long was it in the making as well?

LT: The EP is really a put together of music I’ve made since I started. The songs are kind of different but in a way they have the same feeling. It’s really an EP with dreamy songs about growing up and the challenges and feeling connected to that experience.

EQ: You’re an all-round creative. Does your passion for film/script writing inspire you with your music in any way?

LT: It’s an interesting question! Yes i think so maybe in the way to send a message in a very subtle way. That everything is open for interpretation.

EQ: Following up on this, what’s usually your creative process when writing a new single or planning a new video?

LT: Every song or video has its own creative process. But in the most cases I have a very clear picture of what the song should sound like or how the video should feel. And then i just try to imitate the picture in my head as well as possible.

EQ: What else can we expect from you this year? Anything you can let us in on?

LT: I hope to come out and play some concerts as soon as you are able to. And as soon as the EP is released i will be laying my focus on making a full Love Truls album, which i really look forward to.
