EQUATE Introducing Molly Elizabeth
"I wrote the song with Lauren before lockdown and it’s interesting because I’ve grown and changed so much since we first put the track down. I’m in a much better headspace now and the song has taken on new meaning and a new life"

Introducing Molly Elizabeth - the Essex-based songwriter has only recently dropped her Lauren Faith-produced debut single but has had an exciting journey behind her already. Meeting Adele’s vocal age at the tender age of 14 led to the British talent win a spot at London’s renowned music college ELAM where she developed her vocal and songwriting abilities. Throughout the pandemic she contributed to the soundtrack to Theresa Ikoko’s BAFTA winning feature film, Rocks, and joined the 22-piece youth vocal collective Flames Collective - Molly truly is a force to be reckoned with. Now, she is ready to take over the music scene by storm more, and her impressive debut proves that she has what it takes.

EQ: Hey Molly, what is your first musical experience and when did you know that you wanted to get into music?
M: My mum and sisters would always always sing around the house when I was growing up. Whenever we did odd jobs, we’d make light work of it by singing. Whistle while you work haha. But I started proper lessons at 10 years old.
EQ: In London you became part of the Urban Flames collective, can you tell us more about that?
M: I still live in Essex with my fam - not ready to leave home just yet! Flames has been amazing and helped my confidence grow so much. I’ve met some of my best friends being part of this collective. When I graduated from ELAM it was hard to lose that musical community - suddenly I was back home. No one tells you about how difficult it is when you graduate. But Flames became the space where I could express myself again.
EQ: So your debut single ‘Please Just Wait’ is out now, what is the message behind the lyrics?
M: It’s a break up song I wrote about a time when I was at my most vulnerable but I thought I didn’t want things to change. I tried to keep the relationship alive, even though deep down I knew it was over.

EQ: How does it feel having your debut out now, it must feel so exciting?
M: It’s surreal! I wrote the song with Lauren before lockdown and it’s interesting because I’ve grown and changed so much since we first put the track down. I’m in a much better headspace now and the song has taken on new meaning and a new life. I can’t wait to play it live. Songs have the power to take you right back to a moment, and you can see how much you’ve grown since.
EQ: How was working with Lauren Faith on the release, and how did the collaboration come about?
M: I wanted to find a female producer to work with, as I have so many amazing women in my life it was important to create that safe space in the studio. Going into sessions at a young age can at times be scary as you are baring your soul, but when I heard Lauren’s production I DM’d her immediately and we started chatting. She has been my friend and mentor throughout the process. Going to her studio was like a form of therapy. We’d sit and talk about romance and relationships and made them into songs that I am so proud of. We wrote ‘Please Just Wait’ on our third time meeting - it just all came out straight away. It’s rare to find someone who understands you straight away. We need more female producers and I can’t wait to see Lauren’s star rise.

EQ: You filmed the visual in Leigh on Sea, how was the filming process and why did you decide to shoot it there?
M: I feel most at home by the sea! It’s my happy place. It was always my dream to have my first visual at home and in all of my favourite places, and an Essex beach is definitely one of them. My whole family live in Essex (I’m one of 14 cousins - and the eldest) so it feels like a love letter to my home.
EQ: What inspires you the most for your artistry?
M: Strong women that have a voice! Everyday!
EQ: What else have you got coming up this year, anything you can reveal already?
M: There is a whole body of work with Lauren I can’t wait to share with you soon…. 😉
