EQUATE Meets SK & The Kings
"Celebrate every victory, even the small stuff and that other people are not a yard stick."

EQ: Hi SK, tell us a little bit about yourself.
SK: Ouch this is a difficult question! I’m just a girl from Luton really. I’m a singer and songwriter and I perform with my band, the Kings.
EQ: How did you first get into music, and who was your main inspiration?
SK: My dad was definitely the one who got me into music, every Tuesday night we had a ritual of going out for a family meal and then coming home and listening to his vinyl’s. He showed me so many different artists and genres and it just made me want to be able to create something like that myself. Although he’d never want to hear me sing, that was my mum – she was always proper encouraging.
EQ: Describe to us what your creative process is like.
SK: It all starts with poetry for me, which mostly comes from conversations or experiences I have or a situation someone close to me is going through at that time. I always carry a notebook with me but to be honest the words usually come to me when I’m driving or when I’m about to go to sleep – really inconvenient if you ask me.
EQ: I’d describe your sound as a fusion of jazz and neo-soul. How would you describe your sound, and why?
SK: I’d say you’re bang on the money. Neo-soul and jazz are two of my favourite genres and are both places I feel I can relate to emotionally when I listen to music.

EQ: Your music beautifully revolves around the subject of love; do you draw inspiration from personal experiences?
SK: These songs are literally diary entries; my mates always say the people I’ve dated are probably scratching their heads trying to work out which songs are about them!
EQ:…and if so, what was the muse behind your new single ‘Even Closer’?
SK: I started dating someone for a hot minute but I was unsure about taking things any further because of bad past experiences, it made me realise I needed to learn to love myself first or I’d always end up being treated in a way that was less than I deserved.
EQ: What do you think the world of music is missing at the moment?
SK: To be honest I think we’re really lucky in the way that there are so many platforms available for artists to share their work on and it’s become so much easier for us all to get our creativity out into the world. I think because of this, the range and variety of artists and music is incredible, I’m glad I get to be a part of it.
EQ: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given since getting to this level in your career?
SK: Celebrate every victory, even the small stuff and that other people are not a yard stick.
EQ:…and what’s the most defining moment you’ve had in your career so far?
SK: I’ve done some wicked things and had amazing opportunities that I’m truly grateful for, one of those was playing live for BBC Introducing last year – I always wanted to sing on the radio when I was a kid so it was a bit of a moment where I thought, my 6 year old self would have been proper proud of me.
EQ: 2020 is set to be a pretty big year for you – what’ve you got planned? Any exclusives you can let us in on?
SK: There’s definitely a lot in the pipeline, I’m working on new music all the time and there’s some exciting things coming your way later this year! BUT I’m the most superstitious person on earth so I’m keeping it all close to my chest.
