EQUATE Introducing VagueEightySix

"Skateboarding and music go together hand in hand. The blend of cruising or coasting to your destination with your favourite tunes banging in your ears gives you a feeling that can’t really be explained in words."

Up-and-coming artist VagueEightySix, who emerged this year, should undoubtedly be on your radar. The singer, who wrote his first songs during UK’s lockdown, has recently debuted his first single ‘Better Tomorrow‘, and his fanbase is already growing at a rapid speed. Drawing inspiration from a plethora of musicians and genres, such as classic MoTown, Hip Hop and Deep House, the exposure to different sounds is clearly portrayed in his music - with his elegant blend of Neo RnB and electronic productions, and his soothing, soulful vocals, the singer has managed to find his own niche within the scene.

His previous singles are all part of his upcoming project which is out soon. We spoke to the multi-talent about his spirit animal, writing in lockdown and more.

EQ: Hey VagueEightySix. How did you get into music?

V: Peace. First of all, I’m just a huge fan of music and all genres. When I was a kid, I remember growing up and being influenced by a wide variety of things I saw and heard. That just kind of stuck with me and my listening ear has become accustomed to that ever since. I was that kid who sat by the stereo absorbing all of my parent’s records, just listening to vinyl’s, reading the lyrics and singing along with these massive headphones on that were bigger than my head. The music took me to another world, I was already hooked.

EQ: Your sound is a beautiful blend of electronica and R&B, with a dash of Hip Hop and House. Who did you grow up listening to and which artists are currently your biggest inspiration sonically?

V: My auntie was a stylist for artists back in the late 80’s and 90’s. I remember seeing stacks of CDs and records of the greats early in their careers and sometimes I would catch myself just analysing the front and back cover of these amazing albums and just being captivated…especially when I discovered the Source and Vibe magazines she had stacked from the floor to the ceiling. I saw how cool and carefree the artists looked back then; I was SO inspired that I knew I wanted to be a part of that world.

I’m from the UK, so House & Garage is something that was just natural to me growing up around the clubbing scene. But going back to the Vibe and Source magazines I was heavily influenced by artists like D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Naughty by Nature, Outkast / ATLiens days as well as The Roots and A Tribe Called Quest.

EQ: I’m curious to hear about the background behind your artist name?

V: Vague is what and who I am. I don’t like to reveal or give too much away. I like to leave a lot open to interpretation. 1986 was the year I was born.

EQ: Only very recently you have released your debut single Better Tomorrow, swiftly followed by Songbird and Golden. How did it feel debuting your music, was it something you’ve worked on for a long time?

V: I produced and wrote everything through lockdown, so it was kind of a blessing for me to truly home in, work on my craft and finish off songs. I’m always humbled by the responses I get from people who listen, I appreciate the energy given back to me from those who do.

EQ: What is your creative process when you are working on a new song - do you have a routine?

V: I like working on the move, outdoors in the sunshine with just me and my laptop which also helps for writing too because no matter where you are there is always beauty around you. Once I’ve got the base of it all then I’ll take it to the studio and structure it and then my boy SUN/MGNETK blesses me with sunshine and helps bring all my ideas to life. So yeah, shout out SUN/MGNETK.

EQ: Your spirit animal is a deer, can you explain us more why a deer?

V: The stag deer is my spirit guide. It was at a certain period of my life that I was going through when I discovered my Angels or spirit guide or whatever you wanna call it. First of all, I kept seeing and hearing the number 86 which somehow led to the image of the stag deer. So, I looked it up and read pages and pages about the spirituality of the stag and what it symbolises, and it all just resonated with me. Now I know my spirit guide will always be right beside me to guide me and lead the way.

EQ: Skateboarding is something you are really good at too, how does that inspire your music?

V: I love Skateboarding, I wouldn’t say I’m really good at it though, haha! I just love to skate for the love. Skateboarding and music go together hand in hand. The blend of cruising or coasting to your destination with your favourite tunes banging in your ears gives you a feeling that can’t really be explained in words, you just have to grab a board and try it out for yourself, and I guarantee your daily worries will go away.

EQ: You also have a wide range of singles coming out in the next few weeks/months, what can you tell us about that already? Are they part of a bigger project? 😉

V: Yeah, I have 5-6 more singles I’m releasing for the rest of the year in addition to my tape: The VagueTape. The VagueTape is a collection of songs I wrote to classic Hip Hop & Lo-Fi House beats while in lockdown, something to pay homage to all my influences. My singles and the VagueTape work well simultaneously for me, it’s like you’re getting to hear both sides of me: the slightly cleaner and more blended influence in my singles vs the more obvious and nostalgic nod to those same influences on the VagueTape. Both are just expressions of myself though, and as artists I think it’s important to remember that’s all we are doing: just expressing ourselves.
