EQUATE Meets Claire Rosinkranz
Although she’s only put out music for less than two years, Southern California singer, songwriter, ballerina, and multi-instrumentalist Claire Rosinkranz is already a superstar and an icon within the Gen Z space and beyond. Her relatable songs with quirky soundscapes and witty lyricism has enabled her to build up a huge fanbase, with all of her songs amassing millions of streams in a short time.
The rising pop phenomenon garnered major attention with her viral hit ‘Backyard Boy’ last year, which inspired over 3M Tik Tok videos – to this date, the track sits on comfortably on over 50M streams collectively. The 17-year old multi-talent is only just getting started though. Today, she released her long-awaited, brand new EP ‘6 Of A Billion‘, and thanks to its brilliant coming-of-age storytelling, it’s lyrically the ultimate Gen-Z teen-flick.

EQ: Hey Claire. How did you first get started in music?
C: My family was the reason I got into music. My dad was a composer producer ever since I was little, my mom would sing and play piano, my grandma on my dad’s side was an opera singer and my grandma on my mom’s side was a children’s singer songwriter. I think it was kinda bound to happen for me to find a passion in music too.
EQ: You taught yourself how to play multiple instruments which is incredible – did you find it hard to stay disciplined?
C: Playing instruments has always been more of a fun thing for me. So as long as I can write songs on it I’m happy.
EQ: Which artists did you grow up listening to, and where do you draw inspiration from for your lyrics/artistry in general?
C: I grew up listening to a lot of Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Jack Johnson, Sufjan Stevens, Adel, JB and a million others.
EQ: Last year, your single Backyard Boy went viral and saw huge coverage on TikTok in particular. Do you believe that, especially within the Gen Z generation, it’s now essential to have at least one tik tok friendly song ?
C: I mean yeah, I honestly think the more songs you can get to blow up on TikTok the better. TikTok is such a crazy powerhouse when it comes to boosting songs so I think if you can get songs to do well on there they’ll have a better chance of doing well everywhere else.
EQ: Generally, how did it feel like to gain cyber-stardom in the midst of a pandemic?
C: So weird. It still sometimes feels fake because I haven’t really been able to go out and perform or see people in person so I don’t think it’ll fully sink in until I do.
EQ: Let’s talk about Boy in a Billion, your most recent single. What is it all about?
C: I was at the piano when I wrote boy in a billion and I was thinking about if you’re caught up on a boy and you need to get past it, just remember he’s one boy of a billion others. Sometimes it’s easier said than done but I think it’ll be kinda comforting to some people who are going through a breakup haha.

EQ: So your EP is out on the 9th, what can you tell us about it yet?
C: The EP name “6 of a billion” was kinda inspired by one of the songs in the EP, “boy in a billion”. But it’s mainly the idea that these are six songs of a billion that I would like to release.
EQ: What do you want your audience to take away from your music?
C: It’s kinda generic but I want people to feel how I felt when I wrote the songs and overall just relate to them.
EQ: What else are you working on right now that you can already share with us?
C: After the EP I have a tour planned for November but other than that, I’ll just be working on more music and hopefully eventually an album.
