Texas’ New Abortion Law
Even though we live in the 21st century, it seems that many things are actually moving backwards rather than forward – many states in the United States Of America, supposedly the ‘land of the free’, have conservative views on abortion and have tried to ban it multiple times. Now, Texas has successfully introduced a law that bans abortion for most women. And to make matters even worse, the Supreme Court has voted not to block the new ban.
The new law restricts women from getting an abortion when a heartbeat can be detected. The problem is evident: By that point many women don’t even know they’re pregnant yet.
The penalties for executing an abortion are humiliating – while patients can’t be sued, individuals who perform the act or support it, such as doctors, staff and even Uber drivers who drive patients to the procedure can, and the person suing is entitled to ¢10,000 including legal fees if they win.
Are there any exceptions for incest or rape? You would think so but in fact, there aren’t. In those situations, the rapist has more rights than the woman seeking an abortion and the penalty for rape is far less. Essentially, a rapist can sue the aborter and collect the money.
Undoubtedly, this will put women with the wish to end their pregnancy into a highly risky and dangerous position as, due to its illegality, it’s no longer a safe treatment for them. It’s a huge step back for women’s rights and a major win for white supremacy and patriarchy.
