‘5 Questions With’: Camidoh

Camidoh

With his mellow, spellbinding vocals, Ghanaian singer-songwriter Camidoh is soon going to be a global household name. The artist created major noise with his previous highly celebrated releases featuring the likes of Eugy and P Montana, and recently returned with a brand new offering, ‘Dance With Me’, featuring rising superstar Kwesi Arthur. Drawing inspiration from Akon and Chris Brown, Camidoh has been making music ever since he was young and garnered initial attention in Ghana’s music scene when he released his single ‘For My Lover’. Ever since, his fanbase has grown rapidly and continuously.

For the video release of his mesmerising new track, the singer gives us more insight into why the visuals are wedding themed and what it was like working with Arthur.

EQ: What’s your earliest musical memory?

C: My earliest musical memory is when I first heard Akon – Lonely. I remember I loved it so much that I went home and tried to create something similar and ended up writing a song called ‘All For You’. The song really replicated ‘Lonely’ as I literally mimicked Akon’s voice and the melody of the song lol.

EQ: For ‘Dance With You’ you have collaborated with Kwesi Arthur, what was it like working with him?

C: Working with Kwesi Arthur has really been beautiful. We actually didn’t record the song together in the studio but we communicated on the phone a lot. I remember making the song and he was the only person that came into my mind as a feature, so I sent it to him, he told me it was dope which was great to hear. He then sent over his verse and it was fire, and we were all very excited. As much as I love the idea of being in the studio with an artist and catching a vibe, this experience was still a beautiful one.

EQ: With the music video out now, what was your creative process for the visuals?

C: Almost everybody who heard the song before it was released felt that it was a perfect wedding song. We felt like it was inevitable that we stage the video as a wedding, and I allowed my team to be in charge of the creative process as to what we were going to do and highlight in the video. I feel like they did an amazing job and I’m really excited about it!

“[The EP] is really going to be a beautiful one and I’m really excited and looking forward to the release and how people are going to take it in, and I hope they enjoy it.”

EQ: Can you tell us more about your Charity initiative ’Save The Kids With Camidoh’ in Accra?

C: Generally I feel like most people refer to us artists as stars and for me I saw that as a way to shine light on other people. With Save The Kids I wanted to use the small platform that I had in 2020 to raise funds to support the people around me. I narrowed it down to the women who were stuck in hospitals after giving birth because they were unable to pay their hospital bills. I was inclined to help these women as I was raised by a single mother and I had a specific respect and love for mothers. I went on to talk to my team about my idea and they were onboard straight away. We then started to put resources together and engage the media, and glory to God we were able to raise funds and get some mothers out. I intend to do this every year and hopefully by November/ December I’m going to launch it again this year with the hopes of saving some more mothers and babies in hospitals.

EQ: With your EP out soon, what can you tell us about the project yet?

C: I actually wanted to put the project out in 2020 but my team and I felt that it was too early as I was still an upcoming artists, and it wouldn’t be wise to release this project during covid so we decided to give it time. During that time I recorded another EP and put it out and it gave me some presence in my home country, Ghana. I’m looking for this project to build on my audience in both Africa & Europe as eventually I want to become a global star. There should be 14 tracks on this project and I have some amazing features, one being Kwesi Arthur and some more which I will keep a secret for now. It’s really going to be a beautiful one and I’m really excited and looking forward to the release and how people are going to take it in, and I hope they enjoy it.
