Why Career Exploration Should Start Before Students Choose a College Major
Choosing a college major can feel surprisingly consequential for a teenager. A student who has spent most of life moving through a prescribed school curriculum is suddenly asked whether they want to study economics, computer science, psychology, engineering, political science, or one of dozens of other subjects.
Yet many students approach that choice with limited knowledge of what the careers connected to those subjects actually involve.
They may know that they enjoy biology without knowing whether they would enjoy working in a laboratory. They may like economics classes but have little sense of the difference between careers in finance, economic research, consulting, and public policy.
Career exploration can fill that gap. And it makes much more sense to begin exploring before choosing a major than to wait until college graduation is approaching.
A Major Is an Educational Choice, Not a Complete Career Plan
Students sometimes imagine a simple sequence: pick a major, graduate, and enter the corresponding career.
Real careers are rarely that tidy.
People with the same degree can end up doing very different work, while people working together may have studied completely different subjects. Even the connection between academic field and eventual employment varies considerably.
An older but useful National Center for Education Statistics analysis found that only 44 percent of the bachelor’s degree recipients studied reported working in jobs closely related to their undergraduate majors. Another 34 percent said their jobs were somewhat related.
The point is not that majors are unimportant. Rather, students should understand what a major provides: knowledge, ways of thinking, access to certain courses, and sometimes preparation for a particular profession.
Career exploration helps them see what they might do with those things.
Students Need Exposure Before They Can Make Informed Choices
A high school student probably has a fairly good idea of what a teacher does because they have spent thousands of hours around teachers. Their understanding of what a product manager, epidemiologist, civil engineer, actuary, UX researcher, or supply-chain analyst does may be far less developed.
Career exploration expands that reference point.
A useful place to start is the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook, which explains typical duties, education requirements, work environments, pay, and employment outlook for hundreds of occupations.
Students can then move beyond online research.
Talking to someone who works in a field can reveal details that a job description cannot. Job shadowing can show how professionals actually spend their days. A summer job or internship may reveal whether an environment that sounded appealing from a distance feels right in practice.
The U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences has highlighted work-based learning as a way for high school students to explore career paths in real settings.
The goal is exposure rather than commitment.
Exploring Early Can Prevent Students From Choosing Majors Based on Assumptions
A student might say, “I want to study computer science because I like technology.”
That is a starting point, but it leaves many unanswered questions.
Do they enjoy programming? Building physical systems? Analyzing data? Designing how people interact with technology? Thinking about cybersecurity? Working on the business side of technology companies?
Each answer could point toward a different academic path.
Interest assessments can help students generate possibilities they have not previously considered. The U.S. Department of Labor’s CareerOneStop, for example, provides a free interest assessment that connects preferences with possible occupations.
Such assessments should be treated as prompts for investigation rather than instructions. Their value lies in giving students new directions to examine.
Changing Majors Is Common, but Exploration Can Make the First Choice Better
Teenagers should not be expected to know exactly what they want to do for the next forty years.
College students change direction frequently. NCES research found that about one-third of bachelor’s degree students changed majors within three years of initial enrollment.
There is nothing inherently wrong with that. College itself is a period of discovery.
Still, early exploration can make a student’s initial choices more informed. Someone who has spent time investigating environmental careers may enter college knowing whether they are more interested in environmental science, engineering, policy, or economics. A student fascinated by medicine may discover an equal interest in biomedical research or public health.
Those distinctions can influence the colleges they investigate, the courses they take in high school, and the activities they pursue outside class.
Career Interests Can Help Students Build a Smarter College List
Career exploration can also improve the college search.
Once students have identified several possible directions, they can investigate what different universities actually offer. One school may have strong undergraduate research opportunities. Another may make interdisciplinary study unusually easy. A third may have close relationships with employers in an industry the student wants to explore.
College Board’s career exploration resources allow students to research hundreds of careers and connect them with educational pathways.
This does not mean selecting colleges based on one job a 16-year-old currently finds interesting. It means having enough self-knowledge to ask better questions.
Students who want help connecting those questions with their broader college strategy may also work with admissions consultants while researching institutions and academic opportunities.
Exploration Can Make Extracurricular Choices More Meaningful
Career exploration is especially useful when it leads to action.
A student curious about engineering might join a robotics team and discover that they love designing mechanical systems. Another might realize that the programming side is more compelling and begin an independent coding project.
Someone interested in healthcare could volunteer in a community health setting. A prospective journalist could work on the school newspaper. A student wondering about business might try running a small project with an actual budget and customers.
These experiences develop transferable abilities even when students eventually choose a different direction. The National Association of Colleges and Employers’ career-readiness framework includes capabilities such as communication, critical thinking, teamwork, technology, and self-development. Students can begin practicing all of them well before their first full-time job.
Exploration also makes extracurricular activities feel less like boxes on a college application and more like experiments with real questions behind them.
Start With Questions, Then Look for Small Experiments
Career exploration does not require a formal internship at a major company.
A student can begin by choosing two or three fields that seem interesting and spending a few weeks investigating each one. Read about the occupations within the field. Talk with adults doing the work. Watch lectures. Try a small project. Take an introductory course if one is available.
Then reflect.
Which parts were interesting? What became boring once the student experienced it firsthand? Did they enjoy solving the field’s actual problems, or mainly the idea of the profession? What skills would they need to develop further?
Answers to those questions are much more useful than trying to identify a perfect career at age 16.
By the time students begin seriously comparing majors and colleges, they may still have several possible directions. That is completely reasonable. What matters is that those possibilities come from exploration rather than assumptions.
A college major should be the next stage of that exploration, not the first time it begins.
